The population of Garmisch-Partenkirchen has been exhibiting an extraordinary commitment to environmental matters for many years. In terms of sustainable development, the Environment & Transport Department has made it its business to show concrete, sustainable perspectives, strategies and measures for environmentally compatible skiing, and to implement them within the region in the context of the FIS Alpine World Ski Championships.

Within the Organizing Committee of the FIS Alpine World Ski Championships, the Foundation ‘Sicherheit im Skisport' (SIS), which is concerned with skiing safety, and the Environmental Advisory Board of the German Ski Association (DSV) are - in collaboration with the TÜV Rheinland - in charge of the Environment & Transport Department since September 2009.
