An agreement between the Organizing Committee of the FIS Alpine World Ski Championships 2011 and the youth hostel of Garmisch-Partenkirchen was reached this week.
The realization of an international youth camp during the major event
was already fixed 3 ½ years in advance. “For us it was no question from
the beginning that we want this youth camp to happen. The World
Championships are supposed to be a meeting place for the young and the
incoming generation of athletes”, emphasizes the Managing Director of
the OC Peter Fischer. Even though it has not been evident that such a
youth camp is going on during World Championships. The last alpine
youth camp took place in 2001 in St.Anton.
According to the wish of the FIS, the organizers of Nordic and
Alpine World Ski Championships are supposed to arrange youth camps
every two years in turns. All the Ski Associations of the different
countries are invited, to enroll young people aged between 16 and 18 to
this camp. The OC pays the expenses after their arrival in Germany.
Finally 100 boys and girls are chosen out of all the applications. They
can, divided in groups, enjoy the city and the event during the two
weeks of the World Championships.
A diversified program of sports and culture will be waiting for the
youngsters during their stay in the city of the World Championships.
Dr. Dirk Heering, head of the section sports projects:
“The young people will visit races, accompanying events and some
cultural highlights. We want them to have a week to remember.” The
youth camp is assigned to the section sports projects and will be
managed by Jenny Kittstein.
We have found a perfect partner for this project. The participants of the youth camp
will stay full board at the very well equipped youth hostel of Garmisch-Partenkirchen.
The hosts Manfred Fellendorf and Holger Strobel estimate highly the
significance of the youth camp:” The international get together of
young people is very important to us. The youth camp of the FIS Alpine
World Ski Championships will be at the right place in the youth hostel
Burgrain. We are very much looking forward to 2011, when
Garmisch-Partenkirchen is host of the alpine ski world”.
