3.000 spectators saw a big show at the first medal ceremony in the World Championships park. Gold, silver and bronze were given over to Elisabeth Görgl, Julia Mancuso and Maria Riesch. All fans got a special bonus: LIZZ Görgl sang again her World Championships song.
Elisabeth Görgl was already in the spot light at the opening ceremony. She sang the official World Championships song "Heaven and Hell" at the Gudiberg arena stage. The 29-year old from Styria delivered a true performance in her first competition. A short advance of five hundreds secured her a gold medal in the Super-G, followed by the US-American Julia Mancuso who won silver.
First race - first medal for Germany
Joy for the host nation, Germany: Maria Riesch kept the pressure and reached third place after a great run to win the bronze medal.
The race in summary
The FIS Alpine Ski World Championships began the first race with mute excitement. Elena Curtoni and Anna Fenninger were the first to deliver competitive times, ending the race place five and six. The group of best runners was topped by Elisabeth Görgl. The Austrian showed courage and raced without mistakes to complete the run with a time of 1:23.82. Maria Riesch followed and caused the fans to cheer. With 0,21 seconds she finished behind Lizz Goergl in second place. Vancouver´s Olympic champion Andrea Fischbacher made a mistake and crashed at the "Hölle" turn, but was not injured. Young Swiss Lara Gut followed and ended the race in fourth place. Everyone waited in anticipation for the US girls´performances. Julia Mancuso delivered a great race and skied sensationally through the "Hölle" and "FIS" aisle. She finished five hundreds behind the gold medalist and secured silver. Title defender Lindsey Vonn disappointed at the end of the race. She could only reach seventh place. The course, set by Austrian Juergen Kriechbaum, had many racers struggle, but the world´s best managed it.
