Super Combined medals went to Slowenian Tina Maze (Silver), Austrian Anna Fenninger (Gold) and Swede Anja Pärson (Bronze). It was Anna Fenninger's first victory at World Championships.
Surprisingly the 21 year old Austrian from Salzburg Anna Fenninger triumphed in the Super Combined. After reaching fourth place in the Downhill race she ensured her gold medal with a faultless Slalom race.
A surprising World Champion
Anna Fenninger follows into the footsteps of her compatriot Kathrin Zettel who didn't start and thus couldn't defend her title. Fenninger had won some Junior World Championships and had been on the podium several times in the World Cup, but never before she had such a big win. In the Super Combined World Cup race in Val d'Isère in 2009 she had finished on the seventh place.
Disappointments for the favourites
The two big favourites of the competition, Maria Riesch (GER) and Lindsey Vonn (USA) finished without a medal. Riesch who had to fight with an influenza placed eleventh (+1,91) in front of her home audience, Vonn didn't start for the Slalom after an intermediate Downhill run she finished on the twelfth place. Elisabeth Görgl (AUT) got into the lead with a great Downhill race yet lost time in the Slalom ( 5., +0,89), insider tip Julia Mancuso (USA) got ranked ninth (+1,33). Swiss medal hopes didn't fulfill: Dominique Gisin, surprising second place after the Slalom, missed the podium slightly with the fourth place (+0,67) while young talent Lara Gut, fifth after the first run, spectacularly dropped out on the last gates.
Flower ceremony with Franz Beckenbauer
Franz Beckenbauer gave the flowers and congratulations to Anna Fenninger at the Flower's Ceremony. The new world champion was moved to tears when the national anthem played and the 10.000 spectators at the Gudiberg went away with nice impressions.
