Lizz did it again! Elisabeth Görgl from Austria won the Ladies Downhill. It was her second gold medal in Garmisch-Partenkirchen. Lindsey Vonn (USA) and Maria Riesch (GER) followed on second and third position.
Super-G World Champion Elisabeth Görgl won her second gold medal in Garmisch-Partenkirchen. The Downhill race is the most prestigious competition during the Alpine Ski World Championships. Thousands of her supporters welcomed the new Speed Queen at the target area. "I really hadn't expected this win. I had been very strained before the beginning. I had still been very nervous when we inspected the slope", said Görgl.
Perfect run from Lizz Görgl
Andrea Fischbacher (AUT) started with bib number nine and set the fastest run. But not for long. With bib number 16 Elisabeth Görgl showed a perfect run and finished the race in 1:47.24 minutes. Surprisingly the favourites Maria Riesch (GER) and Lindsey Vonn (USA) could not beat the time set by Görgl. Riesch was in front at the start of the course but lost time in the last part. Lindsey Vonn managed to thrust her from the second place and won the silver medal. After the race she was more than lucky: „I'm very pleased. It wasn't easy to race because of my injury. I'm very proud of my achievement. It was very hard to concentrate", Vonn said.
Maria Riesch was also happy about her bronze medal: "I hadn't expected to race so well. Unfortunately I made some mistakes in the last part and lost time there. But I'm very happy about the medal!" The Swiss skier Lara Gut finished fourth place. Tina Maze from Slovenia had a deficit of 0.98 seconds and got the fifth place in front of Julia Mancuso (USA). The Austrian Anna Fenninger, who had won the gold medal at the Super-Combined, finished at place 17. She was enervated because of a virus disease.
