Marlies on top of the World

Marlies Schild is the new Slalom Queen at the Gudiberg. She won the Slalom in front of her team mate Kathrin Zettel and Swedens Maria Pietilae-Holmner. The Austrian Anthem was played the fourth time at the Medal Plaza.

Fifth Ladies' Event and the fourth Gold medal for Austria. The best female Slalom skier of the last years is now the World Champion. Marlies Schild (AUT) crowned herself with the title, her first individual. The Austrian won in ahead of her team-mate Kathrin Zettel. Bronze went to Sweden's Maria Pietilae-Holmner. Local hero Maria Riesch finished the race on fourth rank and missed to gain her third medal at the World Championships in Garmisch-Partenkirchen 2011.

The expected victory

Gold was her top goal, to win the Slalom was all she wanted. She is Austria's most effective medal winner of the last years. Unfortunately Marlies Schild always missed a big title. On 19th February 2011 she finally won the Gold medal at the Ladies' Slalom Event.

Comeback and success

After a heavy crash in training in September 2008 she missed a complete saison because of an injury. The big question was wether she could continue her career. Marlies Schild is a true fighter. She did an amazing comeback and was only beaten by Maria Riesch at the Vancouver Olympics. Now she turned the tables an crowned herself with an outstanding performance as the new World Champion.

Double for Austria

Austria is the worlds ski nation number one without any doubt. It is the fourth Gold medal for the Austrian Ladies and in addition to that Kathrin Zettel won the Silver medal. In 2009 Zettel was Super Combined World Champion. It is a big success for her because she didn't had a great season so far. Sweden's Maria Pietilae-Holmner won the Bronze medal.

Disappointment in Germany's Team

It should have been the title in front of the home crowd: Maria Riesch was the defending champion and Olympic Champion in Slalom. It should have been her Championships. Finally she finished fourth place in Slalom, but her two bronze medals in Downhill and Super G are worth more.
