First time on the top of the podium. Many times she finished only in second position, most of the time she missed it by only some hundreths of seconds. Today Tina Maze (SLO) is the big winner.
Tina Maze from Slovenia is the new World Champion in the Ladies Giant Slalom. She retained her lead at the Alpine Skiing World Championships in Garmisch-Partenkirchen after the first run and finished nine hundredths ahead of Federica Brignone (ITA) and the absolute favourite Tessa Worley (FRA).
Maria Riesch dropped out after her fourth place in the first heat. The second German candidate for a medal, Viktoria Rebensburg, missed a medal, too. However, she was able to improve her result after the first heat and finished on fifth place. The titleholder Katrin Hölzl (GER) resigned the second heat after her bad result (20.) in the first run.
Bronze medal for Tessa Worley after a sensational run
Tina Maze had already been in front of Federica Brignone after the first run. The French Tessa Worley was able to win the Bronze medal after a sensational run in the second heat. She had only been on place 19 after the first heat. The Italians Denise Karbon and Manuela Moelgg finished on place four and six.
Tina Maze already won the Silver medal in the Super Combined at the World Championships in Garmisch-Partenkirchen. She also finished the Ladies Giant Slalom at the Olympic Games in Vancouver last year and at the World Championships in Val d’Isère in 2009 on the second place.
