Gold went to Erik Guay from Canada. He won the Downhill followed by Didier Cuche from Switzerland (Silver) and Christof Innerhofer from Italy (Bronze).
The 2011 the Downhill World Champion comes from Canada. After John Kucera 2009 in Val d'Isère, Erik Guay defeats the title in Garmisch-Partenkirchen for his home country. Guay won 32 hundreths of a second ahead of Didier Cuche from Switzerland and 76 hundreths of a second ahead of the Super-G World Champion Christof Innerhofer from Italy.
Minimum time with a great run
Innerhofer started with bib number nine and set the fastest run. But not for long. Bib number ten Erik Guay showed a perfect run from the middle part of the course and finished 76 hundreths ahead of Innerhofer. The time set by Guay wasn't at risk of being beaten until Didier Cuche started with bib number 18. He was in front at the start of the course but lost time in the last part. At this time Guay was cheering with his service team in the leader's box.
"On top of my to do list"
At this time the Canadian may have guessed that nobody would beat his time. After the race he was more than lucky: "This title was on top of my personal to do list. Thanks to all, who supported me. We're going to party tonight!" Didier Cuche was also happy about his silver medal: "For me it was a won second place and not a lost win." Christof Innerhofer felt lucky about his second medal. "I am having a great time here. It is my second medal in three days, before it this took me two years" the Italian said.
Challenging slope
The slope on the Kandahar was in a good condition, despite of the warm temperature. At bib number 20 the Austrian skier Romed Baumann finished fourth place. Aksel Lund Svindal had a deficit of 1,42 seconds. He crashed in the finished area. "The course was quite arduous. I had a very long long jump so I had no more energy at the end and couldn't decelerate in time" so the Norvegian. The winner of the practice Adrien Theaux crashed after a few seconds of his run. Bode Miller had a defict of 2,42 seconds and finished 15th.
