The FIS Alpine World Ski Championships 2011 announce their first prominent guest of honor. During the opening of the joint Munich 2018 bid office in Garmisch-Partenkirchen, Bavarian Premier Horst Seehofer was presented with an antique wooden ski serving as a seasonal ticket to the World Ski Championships 2011 in Garmisch-Partenkirchen. Seehofer was very pleased about the invitation to attend the competition. According to his account, he gave up Alpine skiing once his children had outrun him on the slope. Yet he said he would gladly attend the World Ski Championships in Garmisch-Partenkirchen in order to cheer for the Bavarian participants. The Premier pledged to make full use of the ticket and, as far as possible, to attend all ski races.
Peter Fischer, Managing Director of the GAP 2011 Organizing Committee, is very pleased to welcome the prominent guest of honor, especially as he expects Horst Seehofer to be the athletes’ lucky charm. As Fischer points out, his expectation is based on the fact that Seehofer’s presence during the Olympic Games in Vancouver turned out to have a positive effect on the achievement of Bavarian athletes; whenever the Premier was watching, they managed to win a medal. Fischer hopes the same to come true with regard to the World Ski Championships in 2011.
Thomas Schmid, mayor of Garmisch-Partenkirchen and Vize President of the Organizing Committee, also pins his hopes on the Bavarian Premier’s force. He further highlights that Seehofer’s presence as a fan and spectator emphasizes the outstanding importance of the World Ski Championships in Garmisch-Partenkirchen. During the opening of the joint Munich 2018 bid office, Schmid declared the World Ski Championships also to act as a figurehead for the 2018 Winter Olympics bid. From now on, the new office located in the town hall provides a permanent opportunity for citizens to ask questions and actively participate in the process of application.
