Sports and culture, history and tradition make Garmisch-Partenkirchen. The town is the Number One Winter Sports resort and at the same time one of the major health resorts in the Bavarian Alps because of its climate.
Since at least the Olympic Winter Games 1936 the international top-class sports found a home here. Today the town is representative for the famous “Neujahrs-Skispringen” (this year for the first time on the brand new ski jump) and the Ski World Cup on the legendary Kandahar slope.
Preparations for the FIS Alpine World Championships 2011 and already for the candidature for the Olympic Winter Games 2018 too, are in full swing. Take biathlon, ice hockey, canoe or paragliding – the picturesque town spread into the wide valley where Partnach and Loisach river come together is well known as venue for World and European Championships in many disciplines.

Sightseeing & Excursions
Definitely among the most popular attractions are the Zugspitze and the Partnach Gorge. Enjoy the breathtaking view over 4 countries on top of the Zugspitze or stand spell bound in front of wild waterfalls, cataracts and natural water basins.
The town where the fronts of houses tell stories – another facet of Garmisch-Partenkirchen.
The typical paintings are called “Lüftlmalerei” and you will see them all along. They give evidence about the profession of the owners or show aspects of the daily life of the farmers.
So don’t forget to stroll through Frühlingsstraße in Garmisch or the Historical Ludwigstraße in Partenkirchen.
The host town for the FIS Alpine Ski World Championships 2011 has plenty of traditions. You are cordially invited to visit the former historical sports venues. There is a special walking trail, leading from the ski stadium at the bottom of Gudiberg to the end of the downhill slope.
On your way you can see the old, now restored bob run, the Olympic Ice Sport Center and the Riessersee. There is a special map for further information (“Erlebnistour-Olympia”).
Close by Garmisch-Partenkirchen is the town of the Passion Plays Oberammergau, the castles of fairytale king Ludwig II Neuschwanstein and Linderhof, and Munich, the capital of Bavaria.

Events & Festivals
Numerous festivities, cultural and sports events make sure that there is a lot of diversion and entertainment guarantied during the whole year. The winter season 2007/2008 will be exceptional, because the yearly International Ski Jump Event on New Year’s Day will take place for the first time on the newly finished ski jump. The list of leisure activities is almost endless; everywhere and anytime you will find pleasant ambiance and exciting events.
Garmisch-Partenkirchen is not only the Number 1 Winter Sport Place; also in summer the preconditions for an exciting vacation are the best. But adventures in Garmisch-Partenkirchen do not necessarily imply a lot of adrenalin. The authentic Bavarian culture is another kind of adventure: sometimes “gemütlich”, sometimes colorful or in traditional costumes. The mixture makes the difference!
